The glyph is a superscript composition of the glyphs Latin Capital Letter T, Latin Capital Letter M. Its width in East Asian texts is determined by its context. It can be displayed wide or narrow. In bidirectional text it acts as Other Neutral. When changing direction it is not mirrored. If its East Asian Width is “narrow”, U+2122 forms a word with similar characters, which prevents a line break inside it. Otherwise it allows line breaks around it, except in some numeric contexts.

In Canada, an equivalent marque de commerce symbol, 🅪 (U+1F16A) is used in Quebec. Canada also has an Official mark symbol, ⟨Ⓜ⟩, to indicate that a name or design used by Canadian public authorities is protected.
