U+0060 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+0000 para U+007F Basic Latin in the U+0000 para U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Símbolo modificador and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script. El carácter es también conocido como backtick y backquote.

The glyph is not a composition. Its East Asian Width is narrow. In bidirectional text it acts as Other Neutral. When changing direction it is not mirrored. The word that U+0060 forms with similar adjacent characters prevents a line break inside it. The glyph can be confused with one other glyph.

The CLDR project calls this character “acento grave” for use in screen reading software. It assigns these additional labels, e.g. for search in emoji pickers: acento, grave, tono.

El acento grave indica la apertura de las vocales e y o en varias lenguas romances. En catalán, francés e italiano, indica que estas vocales son abiertas: è se pronuncia [ɛ] y ò se pronuncia [ɔ].
