U+00A2 Cent Sign

U+00A2 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+0080 para U+00FF Latin-1 Supplement in the U+0000 para U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Símbolo monetario and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script.

The glyph is not a composition. Its East Asian Width is narrow. In bidirectional text it is written as end of a European number, e.g., a currency symbol, from left to right. When changing direction it is not mirrored. U+00A2 prohibits a line break before it, if it follows a number. The glyph can be confused with one other glyph.

The CLDR project calls this character “céntimo” for use in screen reading software. It assigns these additional labels, e.g. for search in emoji pickers: centavo.

El centavo, céntimo o centésimo (dependiendo de la moneda), es una fracción monetaria utilizada por algunas monedas nacionales, y su valor es la centésima parte del valor de la moneda correspondiente. En algunos casos se utiliza a veces el símbolo ¢ para referirse al centavo, aunque no se trata de un símbolo oficial reconocido internacionalmente.

El uso de cada uno de los términos no depende del país o continente en el que estemos, sino que depende de la moneda a la que nos referimos. Así, el dólar estadounidense se divide en centavos, el bolívar venezolano en céntimos, y el balboa panameño en centésimos.

La abreviatura de centavo y centésimo es «cent.» y la de céntimo es «cént.»; en todos los casos la abreviatura del plural es «cts.».[1]​

En el caso del euro, la división de la moneda es «cent»[2]​ (plural «cents»), aunque tradicionalmente se traduce al español como céntimos.[3]​
