U+00A5 Yen Sign

U+00A5 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+0080 to U+00FF Latin-1 Supplement in the U+0000 to U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Currency Symbol and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script. Znak jest również znany jako yuan sign (renminbi).

The glyph is not a composition. Its East Asian Width is narrow. In bidirectional text it is written as end of a European number, e.g., a currency symbol, from left to right. When changing direction it is not mirrored. U+00A5 prohibits a line break after it, if it is followed by a number. The glyph can be confused with one other glyph.

The CLDR project calls this character “jen” for use in screen reading software. It assigns these additional labels, e.g. for search in emoji pickers: CNY, JPY, juan, waluta.
