U+00B8 wurde in Version 1.1 in 1993 zu Unicode hinzugefügt. Er gehört zum Block U+0080 bis U+00FF Latin-1 Supplement in der U+0000 bis U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

Dieses Zeichen ist ein Modifier Symbol und wird allgemein verwendet, das heißt, in keiner speziellen Schrift.

Das Zeichen ist eine Kompatibilität Zusammensetzung der Zeichen Space, Combining Cedilla. Seine Weite in ostasiatischen Texten wird vom Kontext bestimmt. Es kann weit oder schmal sein. In bidirektionalem Text handelt es als Other Neutral. Bei einem Richtungswechsel wird es nicht gespiegelt. Wenn seine ostasiatische Weite „schmal“ ist, bildet U+00B8 mit ähnlichen Zeichen ein Wort, das in sich Zeilenumbrüche verbietet. Andernfalls erlaubt es Zeilenumbrüche um sich herum, außer in einigen numerischen Kontexten. Der Buchstabe kann mit einem anderen Zeichen verwechselt werden.

Eine Cedille [seˈdiːj(ə)] (französisch cédille, spanisch cedilla, portugiesisch cedilha, türkisch Sedil, eigentlich „kleines Z“; auch Zedille, Zedilla, Cedilha), entsprechend ihrer Zeichengestalt auch Hakenstrich, ist ein diakritisches Zeichen zur Kennzeichnung einer besonderen Aussprache eines Buchstabens. Es ist ein links gekrümmtes Häkchen in der Mitte unter dem Buchstaben, das einer 5, einem kleinen gespiegelten c, einem kleinen s oder einem z mit Unterschlinge ähneln kann.
