U+00A6 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+0080 para U+00FF Latin-1 Supplement in the U+0000 para U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Otro símbolo and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script. El carácter es también conocido como broken vertical bar (1.0) y parted rule (in typography).

The glyph is not a composition. Its East Asian Width is narrow. In bidirectional text it acts as Other Neutral. When changing direction it is not mirrored. The word that U+00A6 forms with similar adjacent characters prevents a line break inside it.
