Ligatura liter „I” oraz „J” zajmuje pośrednie stanowisko między samodzielną literą a dwoma odrębnymi znakami znajdującymi się ze względów np. estetycznych blisko siebie. Nederlandse Taalunie, międzynarodowa organizacja czuwająca nad językiem niderlandzkim, nie traktuje wprawdzie „IJ” jako samodzielnej litery, ale uznaje ją za ligaturę.
