This character is a Uppercase Letter and is mainly used in the Greek script. Its lowercase variant is Glifo para U+03B1 Greek Small Letter Alpha.

The glyph is not a composition. Its width in East Asian texts is determined by its context. It can be displayed wide or narrow. In bidirectional text it is written from left to right. When changing direction it is not mirrored. The word that U+0391 forms with similar adjacent characters prevents a line break inside it. The glyph can be confused with one other glyph.

Alfa[1]​ (en mayúscula Α, en minúscula α; llamada en griego antiguo ἄλφα álpha /ál.pʰa/, en griego moderno άλφα álfa /ˈal.fa/)[2]​[3]​ es la primera letra del alfabeto griego. En griego antiguo el alfa era llamada [ˈalpʰa], nombre que deriva de la antigua letra fenicia ʾalp, 'buey'. Su origen gráfico es una cabeza de buey invertida. El alfa mayúscula tiene una forma idéntica a las dos letras principales que surgieron de ella: A latina y А cirílica.

Como es la primera letra del alfabeto, el alfa era usada para denotar el principio de algo, como opuesto de omega, que simbolizaba el fin. Por ejemplo, «Yo soy el Alfa y la Omega».

En el sistema de numeración griega tiene un valor de 1 (Α΄).
