U+0408 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+0400 para U+04FF Cyrillic in the U+0000 para U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Uppercase Letter and is mainly used in the Cirílico script. Its lowercase variant is Glifo para U+0458 Cyrillic Small Letter Je.

The glyph is not a composition. It has no designated width in East Asian texts. In bidirectional text it is written from left to right. When changing direction it is not mirrored. The word that U+0408 forms with similar adjacent characters prevents a line break inside it. The glyph can be confused with one other glyph.

La Ј, en minúscula ј es una letra del alfabeto cirílico, usada en los idiomas serbio, macedonio, azerí, bosnio, montenegrino, komi. No es la jota del alfabeto castellano.

En serbio, macedonio, azerí, bosnio y montenegrino esta consonante se pronuncia como la palatal / j /. Fue el reemplazo de la tradicional letra cirílica acentuada Й en la nueva versión del alfabeto editada por Vuk Karadžić, quien por ello sufrió acusaciones de sumisión a los católicos austríacos por parte del clero ortodoxo.
