U+2044 Fraction Slash

U+2044 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+2000 para U+206F General Punctuation in the U+0000 para U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Puntuación matemática and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script. El carácter es también conocido como solidus (in typography).

The glyph is not a composition. It has no designated width in East Asian texts. In bidirectional text it is written as number separator according to the number it separates. When changing direction it is not mirrored. U+2044 prohibits a line break after it, and before it, too, if preceded by a number. The glyph can be confused with one other glyph.

The CLDR project calls this character “barra de fracción” for use in screen reading software. It assigns these additional labels, e.g. for search in emoji pickers: fracción, trazo.

This character is distinct from U+2215 DIVISION SLASH. It is intended to represent an actual fraction, not the operation of dividing. In some fonts combining it with numbers leads to a ligature display like “½”. For a discussion see this detailed answer on SuperUser.
