U+2074 Superscript Four

U+2074 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+2070 to U+209F Superscripts and Subscripts in the U+0000 to U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Other Number and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script. The codepoint represents the digit 4.

The glyph is a superscript version of the glyph Glyph for U+0034 Digit Four. Its width in East Asian texts is determined by its context. It can be displayed wide or narrow. In bidirectional text it is written as European number from left to right. When changing direction it is not mirrored. If its East Asian Width is “narrow”, U+2074 forms a word with similar characters, which prevents a line break inside it. Otherwise it allows line breaks around it, except in some numeric contexts.

The Wikipedia has the following information about this codepoint:

In arithmetic and algebra, the fourth power of a number n is the result of multiplying four instances of n together. So:

n4 = n × n × n × n

Fourth powers are also formed by multiplying a number by its cube. Furthermore, they are squares of squares.

Some people refer to n4 as n “tesseracted”, “hypercubed”, “zenzizenzic”, “biquadrate” or “supercubed” instead of “to the power of 4”.

The sequence of fourth powers of integers (also known as biquadrates or tesseractic numbers) is:

0, 1, 16, 81, 256, 625, 1296, 2401, 4096, 6561, 10000, 14641, 20736, 28561, 38416, 50625, 65536, 83521, 104976, 130321, 160000, 194481, 234256, 279841, 331776, 390625, 456976, 531441, 614656, 707281, 810000, ... (sequence A000583 in the OEIS).
