U+2213 Minus-Or-Plus Sign

U+2213 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+2200 to U+22FF Mathematical Operators in the U+0000 to U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Math Symbol and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script.

The glyph is not a composition. It has no designated width in East Asian texts. In bidirectional text it is written as end of a European number, e.g., a currency symbol, from left to right. When changing direction it is not mirrored. U+2213 prohibits a line break after it, if it is followed by a number.

The CLDR project calls this character “minus-or-plus” for use in screen reading software. It assigns these additional labels, e.g. for search in emoji pickers: plus-minus.

In mathematics, it generally indicates a choice of exactly two possible values, one of which is obtained through addition and the other through subtraction.

In statistics and experimental sciences, the sign commonly indicates the confidence interval or uncertainty bounding a range of possible errors in a measurement, often the standard deviation or standard error. The sign may also represent an inclusive range of values that a reading might have.

In chess, the sign indicates a clear advantage for the white player; the complementary minus-plus sign, ∓ indicates the same advantage for the black player.
