U+22EE wurde in Version 1.1 in 1993 zu Unicode hinzugefügt. Er gehört zum Block U+2200 bis U+22FF Mathematical Operators in der U+0000 bis U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

Dieses Zeichen ist ein Math Symbol und wird allgemein verwendet, das heißt, in keiner speziellen Schrift.

Das Zeichen ist keine Zusammensetzung. Es hat keine zugewiesene Weite in ostasiatischen Texten. In bidirektionalem Text handelt es als Other Neutral. Bei einem Richtungswechsel wird es nicht gespiegelt. Das Wort, das U+22EE mit ähnlichen Zeichen bildet, verbietet in sich Zeilenumbrüche. Der Buchstabe kann mit einem anderen Zeichen verwechselt werden.

Das CLDR-Projekt bezeichnet dieses Zeichen mit „vertikale Ellipse“ für die Verwendung in Screenreader-Software.

The ellipsis ... (; also known informally as dot dot dot) is a series of dots that indicates an intentional omission of a word, sentence, or whole section from a text without altering its original meaning. The plural is ellipses. The term originates from the Ancient Greek: ἔλλειψις, élleipsis meaning 'leave out'.
Opinions differ as to how to render ellipses in printed material. According to The Chicago Manual of Style, it should consist of three periods, each separated from its neighbor by a non-breaking space: . . .. According to the AP Stylebook, the periods should be rendered with no space between them: .... A third option is to use the composed glyph U+2026 … HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS.
