U+A8F1 was added in Unicode version 5.2 in 2009. It belongs to the block U+A8E0 to U+A8FF Devanagari Extended in the U+0000 to U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Nonspacing Mark and is mainly used in the Devanagari script. It is also used in the scripts Bengali, Tulu-Tigalari. The character is also known as vaidika saamasvara diirghiibhaava.

The glyph is not a composition. It has no designated width in East Asian texts. In bidirectional text it acts as Nonspacing Mark. When changing direction it is not mirrored. U+A8F1 prohibits a line break before it.
