U+0060 Grave Accent

U+0060 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+0000 to U+007F Basic Latin in the U+0000 to U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Modifier Symbol and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script. The character is also known as backtick and backquote.

The glyph is not a composition. Its East Asian Width is narrow. In bidirectional text it acts as Other Neutral. When changing direction it is not mirrored. The word that U+0060 forms with similar adjacent characters prevents a line break inside it. The glyph can be confused with one other glyph.

The CLDR project calls this character “grave accent” for use in screen reading software. It assigns these additional labels, e.g. for search in emoji pickers: accent, grave, tone.

The Wikipedia has the following information about this codepoint:

The backtick ` is a typographical mark used mainly in computing. It is also known as backquote, grave, or grave accent.

The character was designed for typewriters to add a grave accent to a (lower-case) base letter, by overtyping it atop that letter. On early computer systems, however, this physical dead key+overtype function was rarely supported, being functionally replaced by precomposed characters. Consequently, this ASCII symbol was rarely (if ever) used in computer systems for its original aim and became repurposed for many unrelated uses in computer programming.

The sign is located on the left-top of a US or UK layout keyboard, next to the 1 key. On older keyboards, the Escape key was at this location, and the backtick key was somewhere on the right side of the layout. Provision (if any) of the backtick on other keyboards varies by national keyboard layout and keyboard mapping.
