U+2014 was added in Unicode version 1.1 in 1993. It belongs to the block U+2000 para U+206F General Punctuation in the U+0000 para U+FFFF Basic Multilingual Plane.

This character is a Dash Punctuation and is commonly used, that is, in no specific script.

The glyph is not a composition. Its width in East Asian texts is determined by its context. It can be displayed wide or narrow. In bidirectional text it acts as Other Neutral. When changing direction it is not mirrored. It will not end a sentence. U+2014 offers a line break opportunity at its position. The glyph can be confused with one other glyph.

The CLDR project calls this character “raya” for use in screen reading software. It assigns these additional labels, e.g. for search in emoji pickers: guion largo.

La raya (—), también llamado guion largo, es un signo ortográfico de puntuación que se representa con un trazo horizontal largo.[a]​[2]​ En tipografía, usualmente equivale a un cuadratín, o sea, el espacio blanco cuyo ancho mide en puntos lo mismo que el cuerpo o tamaño de la letra que se está utilizando;[3]​ sin embargo, según distintas fuentes de letra, puede variar su tamaño.

No debe confundirse en nombre ni en sus funciones con otros signos (ortográficos o no) que se asemejan a este. Usualmente, se confunde con el signo menos (−), que es más corto que la raya, o con el guion (-), que incluso es sensiblemente más corto que el anterior.

La raya puede, según sus distintos usos, emplearse como signo simple o como signo doble. En este último caso, al igual que otros signos dobles, las respectivas rayas de apertura y cierre deben ir pegadas a las palabras de los periodos que enmarcan, y separadas por un espacio del elemento que las procede o las sucede (por excepción de que sea otro signo de puntuación). De la misma forma, puede o no comenzarse con mayúsculas la primera palabra del periodo que enmarca la raya, según sea cada caso.
